Controversy in OSCE over Suppression of Human Rights and Freedoms in Azerbaijan
The issue of crackdown on human rights and freedoms in Azerbaijan has become a topic of discussion at the meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna.
As diplomatic sources told Turan, the representatives of the European Union, Canada, the United States and other countries raised the issue of the situation in Azerbaijan. In response, the representative of Azerbaijan denied the violations, saying that they are just individual cases.
In response, a statement was made by the US permanent representative to OSCE Daniel B. Baer. He denied the allegation that it was "only a few cases." In fact it is the tip of many other violations of human rights and freedoms in Azerbaijan.
He said suppression of civil society is not just a question of rights, but the problem of security of the country.
Baer went on to say also that the suppression of rights and freedoms in Azerbaijan has an effect on bilateral relations, making them difficult. In addition, membership in the OSCE means accepting certain obligations, the violation or disregard of which is a manifestation of lack of respect and has a negative impact on bilateral relations. -02D-
