Democracy in Azerbaijan has lessened - Freedom House
On April 4, the international human rights organization Freedom House publish
ed its report "Transition Countries 2017", which analyzes the situation with democracy in the countries of Central Eastern Europe, the Balkans and Eurasia. The countries are estimated on a seven-point scale.
The highest score was rated 1 point, the worst - 7 points. Azerbaijan received 7 points on the level of suffrage, the state of civil society, independent media, democratic governance, independence of the judiciary.
Only according to local democratic governance Azerbaijan received 6.5 points. As a result, the level of democracy in Azerbaijan is estimated at an average of 6.93 points. Last year it was 6.86. The neighbors of Azerbaijan - Georgia and Azerbaijan received respectively 4.61 and 5.39 points. In five of the 12 countries in the region, the corruption situation has worsened. At the lowest level are Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. "Freedom House" also points out that the non-settlement of the conflict can increase the risks of wars. At the beginning of the year shootings intensified in the east of Ukraine, tensions between Kosovo and Serbia increased. Armenia and Azerbaijan suffered the most losses during the escalation of the conflict in April 2016. -03D06-

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) today issued five rulings on applications from Azerbaijan. The case of "Afgan Mammadov v. Azerbaijan" concerned the complainant's exclusion from the Bar Association. Mammadov was expelled based on a complaint filed by a colleague, which he considered unjust. The ECHR ruled that Mammadov's rights had been violated and ordered Azerbaijan to pay him €5,000 in compensation for moral damage and €1,000 to cover legal costs.

During the ongoing COP29 climate conference in Baku on November 14, a group of activists staged a protest condemning Russia's aggression against Ukraine. The activists also denounced countries that supply oil and weapons to nations waging aggressive wars. The protest featured placards with slogans such as: "From fossil fuels to peace!", "End war crimes!", "Punish the aggressor!", and "Phase out fossil fuel use to achieve peace!" among others.
