"Great Britain has invested more than 30 billion dollars in Azerbaijan. It is really a lot. It has helped our development. It not only helps us to develop the oil and gas industry, but also helps us in our general development".
The statement was made by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev during a meeting with British Export Minister Graham Stewart on May 21.
Aliyev said BP had been a strategic partner of Azerbaijan for 30 years and would continue to be for at least the next 30 years.
"Because there are new prospects, new agreements have been signed. Both BP and Azerbaijan are actively working on renewed sources of energy.
The President said that British companies had been among the first foreign companies to engage in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the liberated territories.
" The general plans of the cities have already been prepared, and we are in a very active phase. We want to expand cooperation with companies of the UK, which is a friendly country to us," Aliyev said.
UK Secretary of State for Exports Graham Stewart said the UK is a long-term partner of Azerbaijan and protects its sovereignty and independence.
"We are also interested in many issues. However, I would choose two of them. First, your vision of a greener and more sustainable future, to which the United Kingdom is committed. I think you believe that Azerbaijan should not only be a country with a successful oil and gas economy, but also a country that is thinking about the future and making strategic plans for the long term. As the future will be greener, there will be global investment in that area, and we will have an opportunity to deepen our relationship. As you mentioned, BP is your strategic partner, there are great opportunities here," he said.-0-

On August 31, Azerbaijan observes a "day of silence" before the Sunday’s early parliamentary elections for the unicameral Milli Majlis. All electoral campaigning is prohibited 24 hours before the voting. The early elections were initiated by the ruling Yeni Azerbaijan Party. This decision was motivated by the overlap of the scheduled elections in November with the global UN forum - the COP20 climate conference taking place in Baku.
