Election Campaign for Presidential Candidates Started
Baku / 19.03.18 / Turan: Beginning March 19, campaigning started for presidential candidates in the early presidential elections scheduled for April 11.
The agitation will end one day before the voting begins - at 8.00 on April 10.
For pre-election promotion on a free basis all candidates will in total be provided with 3 hours of airtime on public television and radio weekly. They will also be able to conduct free propaganda on the pages of the newspapers Azerbaijan, Khalg and Bakinsky Rabochiy.
On a paid basis, their agitation materials will be published by 17 news agencies and on-line publications, 8 newspapers, and 4 TV channels - Public Television, Khazar, ATV and ARB.
At the same time, TV channels set prohibitive prices. So, 1 minute of air time in prime time will cost the candidate from 3 to 6 thousand manat.
In addition, candidates can hold meetings with voters in open spaces and halls. For this purpose, there are places in 75 cities and districts.
As a rule, places for meetings with voters are allocated in peripheral places.
Presidential candidates are Ilham Aliyev, non-party member of parliament Zahid Oruj, leader of the Social Democratic Party Araz Alizadeh, head of the United Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan Gudrat Hasanguliyev, representative of the National Revival Movement Party Faradj Guliyev, candidate from the Modern Musavat party Hafiz Hajiyev, representative of the People's Front initiative group Razi Nurullayev (no relation to the Popular Front Party) and the head of the Democratic Party of Azerbaijan (ADP) Serdar Jalaloghlu.
The leading opposition parties boycott the elections. -06B--

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) today issued five rulings on applications from Azerbaijan. The case of "Afgan Mammadov v. Azerbaijan" concerned the complainant's exclusion from the Bar Association. Mammadov was expelled based on a complaint filed by a colleague, which he considered unjust. The ECHR ruled that Mammadov's rights had been violated and ordered Azerbaijan to pay him €5,000 in compensation for moral damage and €1,000 to cover legal costs.

During the ongoing COP29 climate conference in Baku on November 14, a group of activists staged a protest condemning Russia's aggression against Ukraine. The activists also denounced countries that supply oil and weapons to nations waging aggressive wars. The protest featured placards with slogans such as: "From fossil fuels to peace!", "End war crimes!", "Punish the aggressor!", and "Phase out fossil fuel use to achieve peace!" among others.
