European Commissioner concerned with the arrest of Rasul Jafarov
The EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Affairs Stefan Fule expressed concern over the arrest of the human rights activist Rasul Jafarov in Azerbaijan.
The statement recalled that Jafarov was taken into custody after the famous human rights activist Leyla Yunus.
"The arrest of Jafarov creates the impression of purposeful restrictions of civil society in the country by the Azerbaijani authorities.
We have already expressed concern about the security situation in the region in a statement on Aug. 3 on Nagorno-Karabakh. We believe that civil society plays an important role in promoting human rights, especially in periods of conflict," said Fule.
Fule called on the Azerbaijani government to reconsider its policy towards civil society in accordance with international standards. -16D-
