European Court rules in favor of Azerbaijani believers
The European Court of Human Rights found a violation of the rights of citizens of Azerbaijan Azer Samedov and Ilgar Allahverdiyev (Ibrahimoglu) for the freedom of assembly guaranteed by Article 11 of the Convention on Human Rights, stated the report of the European Court in the website of this organization. The complaint due to closing by the authorities of Azerbaijan Public Association "Ittihad Islami."
The ECHR decided to pay the applicants 4,000 euros as compensation for moral damages and another 2,000 euros to cover legal expenses. Public Association "Islami-Ittihad" functioned as an enlightenment and charitable NGO. In 2003, on the proposal of the Ministry of Justice, in accordance with the court’s decision the organization's activities were suspended. The Ministry of Justice explained it by the fact that this structure is engaged in illegal religious activity. -16D-
