Fighting was underway in Almaty last night
Baku/07.01.22/Turan: Last night, fighting resumed in Kazakhstan's largest city, the former capital, Alm-Ata.
According to the Kazakhstan media and telegram-channels, the authorities stated that snipers had acted on the part of the "terrorists." Armed men attempted several times to go live into the on central television, attacking a television tower.
At the same time, the Border Guard Service Academy of the National Security Committee was attacked. The attack was repelled; the head of the Academy was killed.
The commandant of Alma-Ata reported that a counter-terrorist operation was ongoing in the city and that "terrorists and bandit groups put up fierce resistance".
The protesters in Alma-Ata acted professionally, with organized groups, including snipers, said Dauren Abayev, first deputy head of Kazakhstan's presidential administration, on the Khabar 24 television channel.
"Terrorists" also seized an airport building and several aircrafts, he continued. Checkpoints with barricades were set up at all seized sites.
In the clashes with the armed groups, 18 law enforcers were killed. On the part of the protesters, 36 people were killed. About 2,300 were detained. Several hundred people were wounded on the police side.
Despite the authorities' reassurances about full control over the situation, it remains rather complicated in Almata. The authorities have not yet produced evidence that the protesters are terrorists who act according to a plan or being directed by outside forces. -02D-
