Former Prosecutor General and Ambassador Eldar Hasanov to jail for 10 years
Baku/01.21.22/Turan: Eldar Hasanov, the former prosecutor general of the country and former ambassador to Serbia, as well as to Bosnia and Herzegovina, was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Such a verdict was ruled on Friday by the Baku Serious Crimes Court chaired by Afgan Hajiyev. In his last speech, Eldar Hasanov did not admit his guilt and asked to be acquitted.
Thus, the court found him guilty of causing damage to state interests in the amount of more than 180 thousand euros and misuse of more than 100 thousand euros during his work as ambassador to Romania, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the period 2010-2020. These amounts were embezzled during the purchase and renovation of embassy buildings in these countries. Hasanov was convicted under articles on misappropriation, embezzlement and abuse of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.
Eldar Hasanov was arrested by the State Security Service in July 2020 at the same time as several other employees of the Consular Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Due to strange circumstances, three other employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, accused of embezzlement of a similar scale, were later sentenced to probation and released.-02D-
