Georgia Urges Russian Federation to Stop "Illegal Actions" on Its Territory
Baku / 06.08.20 / Turan: On the eve of the 12th anniversary of the August war in Georgia, the embassy of this country in Azerbaijan issued a special message.
It says that, 12 years ago, in August 2008, as a result of a large-scale military aggression against Georgia and the occupation of its inseparable regions, the Russian Federation tried to forcibly change the borders of the sovereign Georgian state and cause serious damage to the European security system.
According to the statement, for 12 years, despite the efforts of the Georgian government and the international community, Russia continued its illegal and subversive activities, worsening the security, human rights and humanitarian situation in the occupied territories.
The statement says that the Russian Federation continues to violate the EU-mediated ceasefire agreement of August 12, 2008, and instead of withdrawing its armed forces, it is increasing its military presence in the occupied territories of Georgia. At the same time, Moscow is taking steps towards the de facto annexation of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali.
According to the statement, the situation in the occupied territories of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali / South Ossetia is aggravated by the so-called demarcation, provocations, barbed wire, illegal arrests, ethnic discrimination, murder of Georgian citizens, restrictions on free movement, a ban on teaching in the native language, etc., which is a heavy burden on the population suffering from the conflict.
At the same time, hundreds of thousands of IDPs and refugees expelled from the occupied territories as a result of ethnic cleansing are still not allowed to return home.
The statement says that Georgia pursues a policy of peaceful settlement of the conflict, and highly values the support of the international community for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.
The message says that it is thanks to the strong and consolidated efforts of the international community that one can achieve success in overcoming the grave consequences of the August 2008 war and in the peaceful settlement of the Russian-Georgian conflict within the framework of international law.
Tbilisi once again calls on the Russian Federation to cease its illegal actions on the territory of Georgia and to fulfill its international obligations, in particular, to cancel the decisions on recognizing the so-called independence of the occupied regions and to comply with the ceasefire agreement signed with the mediation of the EU on August 12, 2008.
On August 7 at 15:00 in the courtyard of the Georgian Embassy in Baku, a photo exhibition and a film screening dedicated to the 12th anniversary of these events will take place.
Russia denies accusations of "occupation" of Georgia. Moscow claims that the reasons for the entry of Russian troops into the conflict zone were Georgia's "aggression" against the territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia beyond its control and the consequences of this "aggression".
Azerbaijan recognizes the territorial integrity of Georgia within its borders recognized by the UN. –06D-

Armenia is not against the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group, but does not consider it appropriate to discuss this issue now. "In the context of peace, we consider it possible to make a decision on the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group. When peace is an established fact, the existence of such a format may raise questions," Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at a press conference today. "The whole question is about the timing, we need to understand how effectively and correctly to turn such topics into a subject of discussion right now," the Armenian Prime Minister added.

On August 31, Azerbaijan observes a "day of silence" before the Sunday’s early parliamentary elections for the unicameral Milli Majlis. All electoral campaigning is prohibited 24 hours before the voting. The early elections were initiated by the ruling Yeni Azerbaijan Party. This decision was motivated by the overlap of the scheduled elections in November with the global UN forum - the COP20 climate conference taking place in Baku.
