Haji Mammadov Hangs Himself in Prison
Baku / 04.12.17 / Turan: A former colonel of police and leader of a gangster group Haji Mammadov, sentenced to life imprisonment, committed suicide, the Prosecutor General's Office said.
According to the head of the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office Eldar Sultanov, a criminal case was initiated on Article 125 of the Criminal Code (bringing to suicide).
According to the same source, Mammadov hanged himself in a medical institution of the Ministry of Justice, where he was placed in April last year in connection with the state of health. According to some reports, he was placed in the tuberculosis department.
Recall that Haji Mammadov and 26 others were arrested in 2005 during a special operation of the Ministry of National Security, code-named Black Belt.
It was found that a group of gangsters, led by Colonel of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Haji Mammadov, was involved in the kidnapping of the wife of the head of the International Bank of Azerbaijan, Jahangir Hajiyev, and demanded a ransom for her.
After the arrest of the gang members, it was established that the criminals were involved in a large number of abductions, murders and extortions. The gang also included several other police officers. The head of the criminal investigation department, General Zakir Nasirov, was also convicted for his relations with the gang.
The gangsters were sentenced to long prison terms, and 7 people, including Haji Mammadov was sentenced to life-long imprisonment. -03D-
