Ilham Aliyev drew the attention of the SCO countries to Azerbaijan's transit opportunities
Azerbaijan cooperates with the SCO countries The East–West and North–South corridors are an important area of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the SCO countries. Cooperation on the East–West and North–South transport corridors is an important area of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated today in his speech at the SCO Plus meeting in Astana. The geographical location and significant investments in transport infrastructure have allowed Azerbaijan to become one of the transport and logistics hubs of Eurasia, Aliyev stressed.
"Due to Azerbaijani investments, the annual capacity of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, an integral part of the Middle Corridor, has increased from 1 million to 5 million tons. We are working with partner countries to ensure the digitalization of the Middle Corridor," the President of Azerbaijan continued. Azerbaijan intends to increase the annual capacity of the international commercial seaport of Alat from 15 million to 25 million tons per year, he added.
Azerbaijan also plays an important role in the development of the North-South transport corridor. The railway and automobile infrastructure of the Azerbaijani segment of the North-South corridor is ready and successfully functioning. "Currently, we are working on expanding the volume of rail transportation to 15 million, and later, if necessary, to 30 million tons per year," Aliyev said.
