IPA Deputy Chairman Dies in Prison Hospital
Vagif Abdullaev, Deputy Chair of the Islamic Party of Azerbaijan (IPA) died early this morning in a Ministry of Justice hospital while serving his prison sentence.
According to Natig Karimov, a member of the IPA Supreme Mejlis, Adbullaev’s body was delivered to the morgue of Azersu hospital for examination. Abdullaev was serving a sentence in Jail 12; he suffered from asthma and cancer. Earlier, human rights activists called on the authorities to release terminally ill Abdullaev. The Prison Service has not commented on Adbullaev’s death.
Abdullaev was born in 1951. He was arrested in January 2011 with a group of other IPA activists and first subjected to administrative detention. Subsequently, the arrested people were charged with criminal terrorism, illegal possession of weapons, and attempts to seize power. In October 2011, Abdullaev was sentenced to 11 years in prison.
Several local human rights organizations recognized Abdullaev as being a political prisoner. He was included in the list of political prisoners by the PACE rapporteur Christopher Strasser. -03S06-

The decision was made on February 6 by the Khatai District Court of Baku, as reported by Turan, citing his lawyer, Shahla Humbatova.
