Lavrov and Mammadyarov Discussed Economic Cooperation
The agreement to hold the next meeting of the intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation between the two countries was reached during today's meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Azerbaijan and Russia, Elmar Mammadyarov and Sergey Lavrov in Baku.
As stated in the press service of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, the sides expressed satisfaction with the current level of bilateral trade and at the same time stressed the importance of joint efforts to further enhance trade and economic cooperation.
In particular, it was pointed out that there are good opportunities for expanding cooperation in areas such as petroleum engineering, metallurgy, aviation, automotive industry and agricultural machinery, trucks and heavy machinery, pharmaceuticals, tourism and others.
In addition, the ministers stressed the importance of trilateral cooperation in the format of Russia-Azerbaijan-Iran for the use of North-South transport corridor transit potential.
There were also discussed issues of humanitarian cooperation and, in this context, noted the opening of branches of Russian universities in Azerbaijan (Moscow State University, Medical Institute named after Sechenov) and a branch of the Azerbaijan State Economic University in Derbent.
The Ministers held an exchange of views on issues of development of the legal status of the Caspian Sea and noted the mutual understanding between Baku and Moscow as to what should make the sea a friendship and cooperation space.
During a press conference after meeting Lavrov expressed hope that the upcoming fifth summit of Caspian states in Astana will be able to agree on the Convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea. -06C--
