Mehdiyev Travels to Iran to Make Excuses for Visit to Israel
On Monday, April 29 the head of the Security Council of Azerbaijan, and at the same time of the presidential administration, Ramiz Mehdiyev went to Tehran.
According to the official Iranian news agency IRNA, Mehdiyev will hold talks with the head of the Security Council of Iran Sayed Jalili. He will also hold a series of meetings with the official Iranian officials.
The purposes of the visit and the agenda are not reported. However, with high probability we can assume that Mehdiyev will explain to Tehran the reasons for the trip of the Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov to Israel.
As is well known, Tehran sharply opposes Baku’s contact with Tel Aviv and has more than once threatened to impose sanctions against Baku. So the official visit to Israel was perceived as a direct challenge in Iran. There is no doubt that difficult negotiations expect Mehdiyev, especially given the fact that he is a weak negotiator. -03D-
