PACE Co-rapporteurs Condemn Verdict on Intigam Aliyev
The co-rapporteurs of the Monitoring Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on Azerbaijan Pedro Agramunt (Spain) and Tadeusz Iwinski (Poland) expressed their deep disappointment about the sentencing of the human rights defender Intigam Aliyev.
"Intigam Aliyev, being a long-standing partner of the Council of Europe, acted as legal advisor in many cases before the European Court of Human Rights.
The pre-trial detention, arrest and conviction of Aliyev are related to his human rights work in Azerbaijan and are part of attempts to make this work impossible," the statement said.
The co-rapporteurs called for clarification of the serious sentence upon the activist.
On April 22 Intigam Aliyev was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison on charges of economic crimes. -06D--
