Peacekeeping forces can be deployed in the region - E. Mammadyarov
Baku / 24.06.19 / Turan: The positive result of the Washington meeting on 21 June of the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia was that the co-chairs formally submitted documents to the parties for consideration, stated Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov at a press conference in Baku.
Referring to the essence of the document submitted by the mediators, the Minister noted that it is a question of proposals "which have already been discussed."
Mammadyarov stressed that the essence of the proposals was set out in a statement by the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs on March 9 of this year.
"Another question is whether we agree with this or not," said Mamedyarov.
The issue of maintaining a truce on the line of contact of troops was also discussed. Mammadyarov stressed that the situation at the front should not be an obstacle to substantive negotiations on a political settlement.
"It is not necessary to establish calm on the line of contact of the troops, and then negotiate. We must conduct substantive negotiations. We are currently working on the basis of the statement of the co-chairs of March 9.
With some points of this paper, we agree, with some - no. This statement says that first of all, Armenian troops should be withdrawn from Azerbaijani territories. Everything else can be solved after.
In Washington, the co-chairs presented official documents, for 1-2 months we should work on them," said Mammadyarov.
He noted that the document should be seriously analyzed. The parties agreed that the co-chairs would propose a new meeting to the ministers in 2-3 months.
The settlement of the conflict should be phased and first of all it is necessary to liberate the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, the minister said.
The Armenian side every time raises the question of "security" of the status of Nagorno-Karabakh. As for security, peacekeeping forces can be deployed in the region. The co-chairs should work on this, the minister said. -06D--
