"Public Chamber" Calls for Support of Political Prisoners
The "Public Chamber" urged the local and international community to start a new campaign for the rights of political prisoners.
In a statement, the Chamber states that as a result of pressure from the local and international community, 9 "prisoners of conscience" (convicted in connection with meetings of the opposition on April 2) were released in June. However, Azerbaijani prisons still contain a large number of political prisoners: PFPA activist Shahin Hasanli, lawyer Vidadi Iskenderli, journalists Avaz Zeynalli and Hilal Mammadov and other activists - Taleh Khasmamedov and others, a group of members of the Islamic Party (including its Chairman Movsum Samedov), etc.
Only about 70 people are in prison on trumped-up politically motivated charges.
The "Public Chamber" demands an end to repression and release of the political prisoners and calls on the international community to exert pressure on the Azerbaijani authorities to address these issues. -03D06-
