Russia Liquidates All-Russian Azerbaijani Congress
The Russian Ministry of Justice appealed to the Supreme Court of the country about the liquidation of the All-Russian Azerbaijani Congress (ARAC). This is stated in the message of the State Committee for Work with the Diaspora of Azerbaijan.
“The widespread Russian media report that the liquidation of the ARAC caused serious concern to the public of Azerbaijan and the large Azerbaijani Diaspora in Russia,” the statement said.
The department notes that ARAC established in 2001 with the support of Heydar Aliyev and the head of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin did a great job in establishing cultural and spiritual ties between the Azerbaijanis living in Russia, integrating them into Russian society and developing relations between the two countries.
The activity of ARAC was “based on the traditions of the centuries-old friendship of peoples anhd served to deepen the strategic partnership between the two countries.”
ARAC carried out its activities within the framework of the laws of the Russian Federation, contributing to the strengthening of religious and ethnic tolerance, interethnic friendship, deepening the dialogue between cultures.
The national and state interests of Russia were the main and unchanged priorities of the organization, the statement stresses.
“The termination of the ARAC activity against the backdrop of complex and controversial processes in the world and in the region does not serve the interests of the two countries. Liquidation of ARAC, or initiatives aimed at inflicting damage on the authority of this structure, contradict the centuries-old traditions of friendship, trust, the spirit of strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and Russia, and can serve the interests of forces not interested in the development of these relations,” the document says.
In conclusion, the hope is expressed that the relevant structures of the Russian Federation will take an objective and fair decision, corresponding to the national interests of the two countries. Currently, in 67 constituent entities of the Russian Federation, ARAC has 73 regional divisions. -06D-

On August 31, Azerbaijan observes a "day of silence" before the Sunday’s early parliamentary elections for the unicameral Milli Majlis. All electoral campaigning is prohibited 24 hours before the voting. The early elections were initiated by the ruling Yeni Azerbaijan Party. This decision was motivated by the overlap of the scheduled elections in November with the global UN forum - the COP20 climate conference taking place in Baku.
