Russia Still Denies Consular Visit for Jailed RFE/RL Reporter
Washington D.C./02.11.23/Turan: The Russian government has not yet granted a request from U.S. officials to visit Russian-American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva in prison, who has been detained in Kazan, the State Department said on Wednesday, TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.
Kurmasheva, an editor with RFE/RL Tatar-Bashkir Service, has been charged with failure to register as a foreign agent. On Tuesday, a Russian court rejected her appeal against pretrial detention.
"We continue to be in contact with her attorneys. We continue to be in contact with Radio Free Europe... We continue to seek consular access to her, and that also has not been granted. We would urge the Russian Government to provide it as soon as possible," State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told TURAN's correspondent during a daily briefing.
The Kremlin is yet to provide formal notification about Kurmasheva's detention, "though obviously we are aware that it has happened." Miller added.
