Statement by OSCE Chairperson about meeting of presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia
OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara welcomed the meeting between the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsian and the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, that took place in Vienna November 19.
"I trust that the highest-level dialogue between Armenia and Azerbaijan will contribute to strengthening confidence and mutual understanding between the parties and will provide a positive incentive for the negotiation process on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement," said Kozhara.
"We believe that such negotiations serve as a warranty for peace, stability and opening new opportunities for regional co-operation. The Ukrainian Chairmanship stands ready to further facilitate the efforts of Azerbaijan and Armenia with the mediation of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs on the establishment of the regular dialogue aimed at reaching comprehensive peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict on the basis of international law," he said.-02D-

Today, the Baku Serious Crimes Court delivered a verdict in the case of public activist Ilhamiz Guliyev. The court reclassified the charges from Article 234.4.3 (illegal drug trafficking with intent to sell in large quantities) to a lighter charge under Article 234.1-1 (illegal acquisition, possession, manufacturing, processing, or transportation of narcotic substances or psychotropic substances in large quantities without the intent to distribute) of the Azerbaijani Criminal Code and sentenced the activist to three years in prison.

On Thursday, Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, reiterated Baku’s demand for the termination of the European Union’s observer mission on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. The mission was initially agreed with Baku as a temporary measure, but its activities have since become permanent. Moreover, the composition of the mission and its mandate have been "expanded," Hajiyev said in an interview with journalists.

On December 12, Azerbaijani Minister of Defense Zakir Hasanov met with a Turkish delegation led by the Commander of the Turkish Air Force, Army General Ziya Cemal Kadıoğlu. During the meeting, the importance of further developing military cooperation between the two countries was emphasized. In turn, Kadıoğlu stressed the need for joint analysis and study of recent global conflicts and modern methods of warfare.
