The Court of Appeal remanded Gubad Ibadoglu in custody
Baku/28.07.23/Turan: Today, the Baku Court of Appeal dismissed the complaint against the arrest of the chairman of the Azerbaijani Party of Democracy and Welfare (APDB) Gubad Ibadoglu. The defense petitioned for a change in the preventive measure and the release of Ibadoglu from custody, the lawyer Zibeyda Sadygova reported after the court session.
It was pointed out that Ibadoglu is a well-known person in society, recognized by leading international scientific and educational centers, including the USA and the UK, a scientist, an economist and such a person who values his reputation will not hide from the investigation. On the other hand, Ibadoglu has serious health problems, he suffers from diabetes mellitus, hypertension and being in custody can aggravate his illnesses. However, the court did not heed the arguments and left Ibadoglu in custody.
The defense will continue legal steps to release Ibadoglu and, in particular, will file a motion to transfer him to house arrest.
* It should be recalled that the head of the Azerbaijani Democracy and Welfare Party, Gubad Ibadoglu, was detained on July 23 in the afternoon. On Monday , he was charged under Article 204 .3.1 (manufacture for marketing purposes, as well as the acquisition or sale of counterfeit money or foreign currency as part of an organized group) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. According to this article, he faces a sentence of imprisonment from 8 to 12 years. On July 24, the court arrested him for the period of investigation for a period of 4 months. Local and human rights organizations condemned the persecution of Ibadoglu and demanded his release.
** Last month, Ibadoglu, together with the head of the National Council, Professor Jamil Hasanli and disgraced diplomat Arif Mammadov, who is in political exile in Europe, announced the creation of the Azerbaijani Youth Education Fund, which was registered in London.
Ibadoglu took the initiative to confiscate the property of Azerbaijani officials abroad and transfer these funds to the mentioned fund. ---06B---
