The ECHR Appoints Compensation to Journalist H. Mehdiyev
Baku / 31.10.19 / Turan: The European Court of Human Rights today issued a decision on the complaint of the journalist Hakimeldost Mehdiyev from Nakhchivan.
The court decided to pay him compensation for 2 thousand euros. The complaint was filed in connection with the appointment of a fine for the use of electricity in 2011.
Calling the court’s decision “fair,” Mehdiyev recalled that in 2011 he was unjustifiably fined for allegedly illegally using electricity. Therefore, the Sharur court found him guilty under Article 189-1.1 (theft of electricity) and fined 1,000 manat.
Local courts rejected the appeal of the journalist, and he appealed to the ECHR with a complaint about a violation of the right to a fair trial. Mehdiyev is known for critical publications of human rights issues in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan. — 06B-
