The prosecutor’s office violates the presumption of innocence of Natig Jafarli, lawyer
Azerbaijani General Prosecutor's Office in the official announcement on the arrest of Natiq Jafarli, the executive secretary of the "Republican Alternative" (REAL) Movement violated the presumption of innocence, Turan was told by the lawyer Javad Javadov.
In the message Jafarli was presented as a person who has committed a criminal act. The lawyer said that he was not allowed to meet with his client, and the prosecutor's office must clarify allegations that Jafarli gave "confessions".
The lawyer also noted that the prosecution is trying to present working moments as something criminal. For example, the order of Jafarli to spend money of grant projects. "What's the criminal?"said the lawyer.
He recalled that the prosecutor's office and tax officers checked Jafarli, and revealed not paying 456 manats of taxes in 2014, and imposed sanctions for the same amount. Jafarli did not agree with this, but has paid that amount.
On the other hand, the terms of attracting Jafarli under Article 192.1 (illegal entrepreneurship) have expired. The new version of the Criminal Code of Jafarli and does not fall under the criminal liability, the lawyer said. The Article 308.2 also has nothing to with Jafarli, and it was applied to justify the arrest of the Secretary to the Judicial investigation.—06D-

On January 13, the trial in the case of public activist Nijat Ibrahim continued in the Baku Serious Crimes Court under the chairmanship of Judge Aygun Gurbanova. The International Committee of Concerned Scholars (ICS) has appealed to the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, requesting his assistance in securing the release of the arrested researcher, Igbal Abilov. The ICS expressed concern that Abilov's arrest "may be related to his research on ethnic minorities in Azerbaijan, conducted in collaboration with scholars from Armenia."
