The U.S. State Department demanded the immediate release of Anar Mammadli
The U.S. Department of State issued a statement in connection with the arrest of the known civil society activist of Azerbaijan, head of the Electoral Monitoring and Democracy Training Center Anar Mammadli.
According to the Azerbaijani service of the Voice of America, the statement said: "We express our deep concern at the arrest of the chairman of the Election Monitoring and Democracy Training Center, Anar Mammadli. We call for the immediate release of Anar Mammadli during the period of the legal process. We have raised and will raise this issue with the senior officials of the Government of Azerbaijan. We continue to closely monitor the investigation of the Election Monitoring and Democracy Training Center and international cooperation of the Public Association of Volunteers.
We also keep track of scrutiny by the parliament of Azerbaijan of restrictive amendments to legislation aimed against NGOs. We continue to call on the Azerbaijani government to respect freedom of expression , assembly and association." -0 -
