The USA imposes sanctions against the security forces of Ukraine
The USA imposed sanctions against a number of Ukrainian citizens in connection with the protests on the Maydan Square. According to the U.S. embassy in Kiev, the State Department can not let into the country also citizens who have already obtained a visa, due to in Ukraine.
"In response to the actions against protesters on Maydan Square in November and December last year, the U.S. Embassy revoked several visas to citizens of Ukraine related to the use of force," reads the statement . "We want to stress that the State Department has broad powers to cancel a visa on the basis of information that points to the impossibility of admission visa to the United States," reads the statement the embassy. In addition, the United States is considering options for further steps in this area.
Earlier , on January 20 , a representative of the U.S. National Security Council at the White House, Caitlin Hayden, accused the government of Ukraine of the deteriorating the situation. She demanded to withdraw special forces from the center of Kiev and begin a dialogue with the protesters. Otherwise , she said , Ukraine would face sanctions. In December of last year , the U.S. Congress threatened the Ukrainian authorities with the application of sanctions because of the use of force against demonstrators. This statement was made by the representative of the Democratic Party of the USA, Eliot Engel. The resolution calls on the Ukrainian authorities and the opposition to the peace and dialogue to resolve the crisis that has developed in the country.
On January 16 Ukrainian Parliament adopted amendments to the scandalous laws, including criminal liability for "extremism" on the Internet , which caused a new discontent among the population. Peaceful protests in central Kiev turned into clashes with security forces. As a result more than 30 people were detained, and two people were killed.
