Three OPON members ask for pardon

 On Tuesday the lawyer Elchin Sadigov held a press conference at the Media Center in connection with the case of three members of the special police force (OPON) - Elchin Amiraslanov, Safa Poladov and Arif Kazimov, convicted for life. 

 
   In March, lawyer sent to the Commission on Pardons a request for release of his clients. Then all the three of them wrote a petition for clemency. However, there is no result, but the lawyer expressed a hope that his clients will be shown mercy.
 
  He also noted that Elchin Amiraslanov, Arif Kazimov and Safa Poladov sent an appeal to the President. The lawyer pointed out that the cases of all three lifers  were sent to the European Court in January this year, and were accepted. 
 
     "My clients were imprisoned for 17 years, they do not pose any danger to the public. All three of them have diabetes, each had been operated o several times in custody. Amiraslanov, moreover, is an epileptic and most of the time  he is in the hospital. I conducted a press conference , in order to appeal through media  with request for the release of the three convicts for life," said the lawyer.
 
       Going back to the history of the question the lawyer said that his clients were sentenced to death in December 1996. In 1998 the death penalty was abolished. In 2004,  a complaint was filed to the Court of Appeal. The result of its consideration  became the decision on life imprisonment.
 
     Elchin Amiraslanov was the commander of the Kazakh OPON, Arif Kazimov and Safa Poladov were members of this structure. All three were charged with several Criminal Code Articles, including treason, participation in illegal militia, attempt to murder and other charges. --04С-
