Turkish military generals demand to revise sentences to generals
Turkish military filed an action on several lawsuits on which senior military officers were convicted. The talk is about several hundred sentences for officers accused of plotting a coup, reports Reuters. According to Turkish media, the lawsuit said that these cases were fabricated .
If the claim is accepted by the court for review, the retrial of the case will be guaranteed, say lawyers in the case of "Ergenekon" , when about 300 officers were convicted for allegedly plotting a coup.
Generals appealed at the moment when the authority of the government of Erdogan has been strongly undermined by the widespread corruption scandal that has already led to the resignation of three cabinet ministers, and caused great questions about the independence of the judiciary.
Erdogan himself argues that the scandal was the result of collusion, managed by anti-Turkish forces from abroad.
The prime fired more than 70 police officers involved in the investigation , and blocked further inquiry in the case of corruption in a number of major infrastructure projects. However, the police challenged this decision.
In the postwar history of Turkey, the armed forces , which are traditionally considered part of the support of secular society , staged three military coups: in 1960, in 1971, and in 1980. -02D-
