A top U.S. diplomat for Europe and Eurasia on September 6 discussed the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace process with Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister.

Assistant Secretary Karen Donfried and Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov "discussed the August 31 meeting in Brussels between President Aliyev and Prime Minister Pashinyan," a State Department spokesperson told TURAN's Washington correspondent on Tuesday.

"The Assistant Secretary underscored our strong support for the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace process and for the European Union’s efforts," the official said.

Donfried relayed that Senior Advisor for Caucasus Negotiations Ambassador Phil Reeker would travel to the region soon for consultations.

"They referred to the upcoming UN General Assembly Meeting in New York as offering an opportunity to further the peace process," a State Department spokesperson added.

The 77th session of the UN General Assembly will open next week. The first day of the high-level General Debate will be Tuesday, September 20.
