US, Azeri diplomats to discuss peace talks, election prior to poll
Top US-Azeri diplomats will get together today, September 27, to seek a restart of peace talks over Nagorno-Karabakh, repair frayed bilateral ties and discuss the political situation ahead of presidential election scheduled to October 9.
Under Secretary for political affairs Wendy Sherman will accept Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov in New York City, on the sidelines of the UN session, TURAN's Washington correspondent was told by diplomatic sources.
The discussion will come right after Sherman's meeting with Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbanian.
US has recently announces its interest in helping the two sides reach a peace deal and that the issue is a "high priority." Washington also urged Turkey to normalize ties with Armenia.
Sherman-Mammadyarov meeting will follow weeks after Baku requested postponing of US pre-election delegation's visit to the country, until after the poll.
The delegation, lead by Thomas Melia, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, was supposed to observe preparations for October 9 presidential election.
Mr. Melia expressed regret to the cancellation, noting that Washington will "continue to monitor the pre-election environment through its Embassy in Azerbaijan." -0-
