US Congress to Consider Amendments Limiting Military Aid to Azerbaijan
Baku / 20.07.20 / Turan: Today, July 20, the US Congress plans to consider amendments No. 66 and No. 397 to the Law on State Defense for fiscal year 2021, which may lead to restrictions on US assistance to Azerbaijan in the field of defense.
The author of amendment # 66 to the law is Congressman Brad Sherman. He is supported by Congressmen Frank Pallone, Jackie Speyer, Adam Schiff and Terrence John Cox.
According to the amendment, "no funds allowed by this bill can be used to transfer defense items or services to Azerbaijan, unless the President confirms to Congress that the transfer of such defense items or services does not threaten civil aviation."
Amendment 397 has been submitted by Frank Pallone. It requires the Ministry of Defense to submit to Congress a report on the US military assistance program for defense of Azerbaijan in the amount of more than $ 120 million that had previously been submitted. The draft amendment was supported by Congressmen Adam Schiff, Brad Sherman, and Jackie Speyer.
The executive director of the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) Aram Hambaryan believes that these amendments will help contain Azerbaijan.
About 30 years Azerbaijan has been fighting for the liberation of its territories from the Armenian occupation.
Azerbaijan’s National Council of Democratic Forces and the Movement for Democracy and Welfare have called on Congress not to accept these amendments, which could harm US interests in the region. —0—
