Ruben Vardanyan faces criminal charges
Baku/28.09.23/Turan: A billionaire, former "state minister" of the separatist regime in Karabakh has been criminally charged with financing terrorism, establishing illegal armed formations and illegally crossing the border of Azerbaijan, the country's SSS said today.
He was prosecuted within the framework of a criminal case investigated by the SSS of Azerbaijan on numerous terrorist offences committed by illegal Armenian armed formations in Karabakh.
During the investigation, based on the collected evidence, reasonable suspicions were established that Vardanyan had committed acts stipulated by Articles 214-1 (financing of terrorism), 279.3 (participation in the establishment and activities of illegal armed formations) and 318.1 (illegal crossing of the state border of Azerbaijan) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
According to the charges against him, Vardanyan, being a foreign citizen, illegally crossed the state border of Azerbaijan in September 2022 and arrived in Karabakh, where he took part in the establishment and activity of armed formations not provided by the legislation of Azerbaijan.
He was also involved in supplying weapons and military equipment to illegal military formations, which carried out attacks on institutions, organisations and individuals, resulting in deaths and other serious consequences.
Besides, Vardanyan took part in the financing of terrorism by allocating money to organise the terrorist activities of the said illegal armed groups, the press release further said.
Recall that Ruben Vardanyan was detained on 27 September 2023 for the committed illegal actions and brought to criminal responsibility as an accused, and a measure of restraint in the form of arrest was chosen against him by court decision. Investigative and operative measures continue in the criminal case, the press release concluded. -06В-

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) today issued five rulings on applications from Azerbaijan. The case of "Afgan Mammadov v. Azerbaijan" concerned the complainant's exclusion from the Bar Association. Mammadov was expelled based on a complaint filed by a colleague, which he considered unjust. The ECHR ruled that Mammadov's rights had been violated and ordered Azerbaijan to pay him €5,000 in compensation for moral damage and €1,000 to cover legal costs.
