West neutralizes dependence on Russian energy supplies

The UK, together with the U.S. and European countries, is developing a plan to "neutralize" the threat of the use by the Russian President of Russian gas and oil supplies as a " weapon" against Ukraine and its Eastern European neighbors ," says The Independent.

In June, at a meeting of Heads of State of G7 , David Cameron and other leaders of G7 are expected to sign an " emergency response plan " to assist Ukraine in the winter of this year in the case of limiting Russian gas supplies.”

"Also this week, the energy ministers of G7 countries agreed on a long-term plan to eliminate Europe's dependence on oil and gas from Russia and the Kremlin to prevent the use of energy security as a political trump card," the newspaper said.

It is about creating several new liquefied natural gas terminals in Europe, the lifting of restrictions on the export of U.S. shale gas and to invest in new pipelines to transport gas from the West to the East and the expansion of shipping routes from North Africa.

Ed Davey , the Minister for Energy and Climate Change , who represented Britain at G7 in Rome , told The Independent: until appropriate action is taken , " Russia will undoubtedly use energy as a weapon ," which, according to him, "is totally unacceptable ."

Davey said that G7 countries agreed to work on "neutralizing the threat" in the long run. And soon, said Davey, in a few weeks there will be a plan to support the energy needs of Ukraine this spring in case if Russia shuts off gas. A source at Downing Street confirmed that Cameron "fully supports" the strategy," the article says.

Note that one of the instruments for liberation from dependence on Russian energy system will be gas from Azerbaijan to Europe through Georgia and Turkey. -02D-
