Activist of Musavat Sentenced to 2.5 Years in Prison

Baku / 03.10.17 / Turan: The Masally district court sentenced the head of the local organization of the Musavat party Hasay Farzullah to 2.6 years of imprisonment for a traffic accident.

On April 5 Farzullah being behind the wheel of his car knocked a pedestrian who jumped suddenly on his way to the village of Badalan in the Masally district, Rauf Taghiyev. He took the victim to hospital, and then paid for his treatment, including a surgical operation in Baku.

The lawyer Nemat Kerimli called the court's decision biased and said the defense would appeal it.

The leader of the Musavat Party, Arif Hajili, considers the legal verdict as "political."

"In similar situations, in Azerbaijan, punishments are often not imposed at all or light punishments are often used. As for the representative of Musavat, the most severe punishment possible was appointed," the oppositionist said.

In his view, the government will inevitably lose this case in the European Court of Human Rights. -06D--
