Adviser of the head of "Musavat" party is sentenced to six years in prison
On Monday the Lankaran Regional Court sentenced adviser to the head of "Musavat" party, Yadigar Sadigov, to six years in prison on charges of hooliganism.
The prosecutor asked to sentence Sadigov to seven years under Article 221.3 ( hooliganism committed with a weapon.)
Sadigov was arrested on June 27 on the complaint of a local resident Rashid Karimov, who claimed that on June 25 Sadigov beat him in a teahouses in Lankaran city.
The sentencing was preceded by speeches of lawyers of the accused.
They stated about the political nature of the criminal proceedings, and demanded acquittal.
In turn, the complainant Kerimov threatened the accused and the lawyers by murder. Supporters of Sadigov in the courtroom in protest against unjust sentence sang the hymn of Azerbaijan.
Sadigov is one of the most active opposition politicians in the southern region, and is popular among the population. He was also active in facebook.
Sadigov organized the trip of the leader of "Musavat" party, Isa Gambar, in Lankaran in January 2013, which was prevented by police and local activists of the ruling party.
There is no doubt that human rights defenders regarded Sadigov as a political prisoner.—16D06-
