Afgan Mukhtarly May Resume Hunger Strike

Baku / 09.25.19 / Turan: Journalist Afgan Mukhtarly intends to resume a hunger strike in prison if there is no objective investigation of pressure on his lawyer Nemat Karimli and if the lawyer is punished. This was written by his wife Leyla Mustafaeva on her page on Facebook.

Mukhtarly on September 25 in a telephone conversation told her the reasons for the suspension of the hunger strike.

On September 24, on the third day of the hunger strike, he began to feel severe pains in his eyes. In this regard, Mukhtarly was forced to stop the hunger strike. "He still has severe pains in his eyes, and he needs an urgent medical examination," Mustafayeva wrote.

The journalist considers it necessary to conduct an investigation into the pressure in the prison on his lawyer by the Ministry of Justice, since the Prison Service showed bias by complaining about Mukhtarly's lawyer to the Bar Association.

Moreover, according to Mukhtarly, for the period of the investigation, the head of prison No. 16, Shafayat Abbasov and his deputy Emin Eminaliev, should be removed from their posts because the prison leadership is collecting evidence from prisoners against Karimli, and only one of the convicts refused to sign false information.

Mukhtarly believes that the chairman of the Bar Association, Anar Bagirov, has already come forward with threats of punishment for Karimli. And this, according to Mukhtarly, indicates that the Prison Service, together with the Bar Association, developed a pre-planned provocation against the lawyer. "Nemat Karimli was already suspended from court practice for one year in 2018 because of Afgan," Mustafayeva recalled, setting out the contents of the telephone conversation with her husband.

On September 20, Karimli, the lawyer, announced a search of his belongings and personal search at the entrance to the meeting with Mukhtarly in prison No. 16 and after the meeting. At the same time, the lawyer was subjected to physical pressure and his notes made at the meeting with the journalist were read. On September 22, Mukhtarly went on a hunger strike, demanding the punishment of those responsible.

On September 24, Mukhtarly, a diabetic patient, stopped the hunger strike due to a sharp deterioration in his health condition and taking into account appeals from members of the public.

* Investigative journalist Afgan Mukhtarly was kidnapped in Tbilisi in May 2017, secretly transported to Azerbaijan and arrested. Subsequently, the court sentenced him to 6 years in prison on charges of smuggling and violence against a border guard.

Amnesty International recognizes Mukhtarly as a "prisoner of conscience." -21B06-
