Baku / 07.11.17 / Turan: A new criminal case has been filed against the founder and editor of the website www.azel.tv Afgan Sadygov currently held in prison. He has been transferred from prison to the Kurdakhany pretrial detention center and will be further transferred to the Jalilabad region, where he will stand trial.
This was reported by the journalist's relatives who do not know what the essence of the new charge is. The lawyer Elchin Sadygov believes the new criminal case against the journalist was initiated by the lawsuit of the head of the Jalilabad region about libel. In March of last year, a trial began on this case, but hearings were postponed indefinitely. Elchin Sadygov intends to meet with the journalist on Monday.
The founder and editor of the website www.azel.tv Afgan Sadygov was detained on November 22, 2016. He was accused of having struck a woman in the executive power office. Afgan Sadygov called it a provocation.
Afgan Sadigov was convicted on January 12, 2017 under Article 127.2.3 (deliberate infliction of less serious harm to health in a dangerous way for hooliganism reasons). However, on November 7, the Supreme Court re-qualified the charge for Article 127.1 (causing less serious and not life-threatening harm to health) and reduced the prison sentence to one and a half years.
Now three months before the end of the sentence, he faces an extension of the prison term. Under Article 147.2 (slander in committing a serious crime) he faces up to 3 years of imprisonment.
Human rights organizations have included Afgan Sadygov in the list of political prisoners. Local human rights activists believe the journalist was arrested for his critical articles about violations of rights in the region. -06D-

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
