Preliminary hearing in the case of journalist and human rights activist Parviz Hashimli, sentenced to 8 years in prison on charges of smuggling weapons took place in the Baku Court of Appeal on July 7. Protection raised the question on annulment of the sentence of the first instance court and justification. At the preliminary meeting, lawyers petitioned appeal by holding a re-trial. The defense petitioned the change of the preventive measure and interrogation additional witnesses. However, the court rejected all petitions, Turan was told by the lawyer Bahruz Bayramov. The next hearing is scheduled for July 14.
Another convicted in this case, Tavakkyul Gurbanov, also filed an appeal. He complained about the severity of his sentence in the form of 8.5 years in prison.

On May 15 Baku Serious Crimes Court passed a sentence and convicted him under the Article 228.2.1 (illegal purchase, transfer, sale, storage, transportation or carrying of weapons and ammunition, committed by persons acting in collusion) and 228.2.2 (the same action committed repeatedly) and 206.3.2 (smuggling of persons by prior agreement), and sentenced to years in prison. Under the same Articles the second defendant Tavakkyul Gurbanov was convicted to 8.5 years. -16/06D-

Namizad Safarov, a candidate for deputy in Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis, has criticized the Central Election Commission (CEC) for its unpreparedness in holding democratic elections. According to the prosecutor's office, criminologists examined the scene and the corpse, seized physical evidence and took statements. In fact, the military prosecutor's office opened a criminal case under the relevant Article of the Criminal Code, questioned witnesses, appointed examinations, the message says. The report does not say what kind of weapon the soldier shot himself with or when it happened.
