Arrested activist Anar Mammadli condemned not allowing PACE President to visit him in jail
Yesterday the lawyer Fariz Namazly met in a Baku prison with the head of the Election Monitoring and Democracy Studies Center (EMDSC), Anar Mammadli.
The arrested complained about the conditions of his detention, but expressed concern about the health of the human rights activist Leyla Yunus confined in the same jail, the press service of EMDSC said.
Mammadli also expressed dissatisfaction that representatives of international organizations were not admitted to him. In particular, the authorities refused to permit PACE President Anne Brasseur’s meeting with Mammadli.
The conditions for visiting Mammadli and other arrested human rights defenders by representatives of the OSCE, UN, EU and other international organizations have not been created either. Such behavior of the authorities proves unfounded the arrests of the human rights defenders.
* Anar Mammadli was sentenced to 5.5 years of imprisonment, and the executive secretary of the NGO Bashir Suleymanli was sentenced to 3.5 years. For the same period was conditionally sentenced the head of the Public Association for International Cooperation of Volunteers, Elnur Mammadov. They were found guilty of tax evasion, illegal business, misappropriation, etc. Amnesty International announced Mammadli «prisoner of conscience" and included him in the short list of nominees for the Vaclav Havel award. -06S06-
