Arrested Opposition Activist on Hunger Strike in Support of Mehman Huseynov
Baku / 10.01.19 / Turan: On January 9, the Baku Court of Appeal rejected the complaint of the Musavat party activist Azad Hasanov about the refusal to be transferred to house arrest. This was announced by his lawyer Osman Kazimov.
According to him, during the trial, Hasanov announced his beginning of a hunger strike in support of the blogger Mehman Huseynov and against the violation of his rights to meetings and telephone conversations with his relatives in the detention center.
* On December 26, 2018, 2 months before the completion of the term of his imprisonment, Mehman Huseynov was charged with beating a prison officer. In protest against the fabricated charges, Huseynov went on a hunger strike, which he still continues.
** Azad Hasanov has been in political emigration in Lithuania since 2014. On October 10, he returned to Baku to visit his seriously ill father. However, the next day he was detained. He was charged under Art. 234.4.3 (drug trafficking on a large scale) of the Criminal Code. On October 12, the court chose a measure of restraint in the form of arrest for a period of 4 months. The party Musavat announced the political motives of Hasanov's persecution. Human rights activists announced Hasanov a political prisoner. -03B06-
