Authorities Decide Fate of Former Molokan Worship House
Baku / 05/16/19 / Turan: The Youth Foundation under the President of Azerbaijan is involved in the resolution of the conflict around the former Molokan Worship House. The process of determining the future status of this building at the address 10 Suleiman Rustam Street will last up to three months, the Fund employees told the leader of the informal Underground movement of young fans, Salaam Cinema, Ilkin Huseynov.
The issue is also being studied at the National Academy of Sciences, since it is necessary to determine the historical value of the building. Then the case will be dealt with by other authorities.
Recall that the conflict arose on May 6, when the owner tried to evict the group Salaam Cinema and demolish the building itself. However, the young people refused to leave, demanding that the state preserve the building as architectural monument.
The eviction process was suspended after the youth appealed to the First Vice President Mehriban Aliyeva.
The youth stated that they would leave the building if it was taken under state protection. The building should be withdrawn from the property of its formal owner Valeh Gasimov, as he intends to demolish it.
Young activists believe that the owner can announce the building as an emergency and demolish it. "We do not claim ownership of a historic building, but we believe that it is fair to return it to Azerbaijani Molokans so that they can hold religious rites in it. We met with them and talked about it," said Ilkin Huseynov.
An investigation of the Turan news agency showed that the building was privatized as the property of the Ministry of Communications when Minister Ali Abbasov was in office. There is reason to believe that the real owner of the building is not Gasimov. A very narrow circle of people is allowed to privatize objects in the center of Baku. A local resident said some General is the true owner of the building.
In the meantime, several young people are constantly on duty in the former prayer house of the Molokans. There are also representatives of Gasimov, with whom the youth activists have tense relations. Entrance to the building remains free. -0-
