Azerbaijani Mountaineer Prepares to Storm One of Highest Peaks of World

Baku / 06.05.19 / Turan: The famous Azerbaijani mountaineer Israfil Ashurly is in Nepal, as part of an expedition to climb one of the highest peaks of the Himalayas - Lhotse (8,511 m.) This mountain is in close proximity to the highest peak of the world, Everest.

Having spent two weeks in the base camp at the foot of Everest (5,600 meters), Ashurly, as part of an international group of climbers, made acclimatization exits to camps 2 and 3 (at an altitude of 6,400 m).

At present, a gale wind has been sustained in the area for several days, and the climbers are expecting better weather to storm the mountain.

According to Ashurly, this season, 77 foreign climbers received permission to climb Lhotse from the authorities of Nepal, and another 375 to climb Everest. However, so far no one has climbed.

"I hope that the weather will calm down and allow us to establish a fourth camp approximately at an altitude of 7,800 meters and from there to go to the summit. In the meantime, the weather is raging, and the climbers are resting, preparing for the ascent," Ashurly said in an interview with Turan.

Note that the ascent season in the Himalayas ends at the end of May, as in the summer months the monsoon winds carry snow and storm into the mountains.

* Israfil Ashurly is the most titled Azerbaijani mountaineer, who was the first of our compatriots to conquer Everest (8,848 m) in 2007 and another Himalayan giant - Kanchenjunga (8,586 m) in 2011.

For 6 years, Ashurly headed the Mountaineering Federation of Azerbaijan, but left this post in 2014 after years of sabotage and pressure from the former leadership of the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Sports of Azerbaijan. -02B-
