Clashes with Police in Mingechevir

In Mingechevir, which is located 275 km west of the capital of Azerbaijan, a mass protest took place on August 22, resulting from the death of a local resident Bahruz Hajiyev at a police station on August 20. Hundreds of people, mostly young men, took to the main streets, where there were clashes with police squads. Riot police troops were brought. Dozens of people were arrested.

The spontaneous protest began after the funeral, when it became known that Hajiyev committed suicide after being tortured in police custody. He jumped out of the window on the third floor and died.

The latest similar protests and clashes with the police took place in Ismayilli I January 2013 and in Guba in March 2012. They were provoked by insults from the authorities.

The fourth largest city of Azerbaijan, Mingechevir, is one of the most socially stressful cities of the country. In the Soviet times, the city was a major center of energy, industry, science, education and culture. Today, the once-developed industrial center has fallen into disrepair. In the city, where, according to statistics, there are more than 120,000 residents, there is a high level of unemployment, especially among young people, and a low level of welfare. 0-
