Court Keeps Ilham Huseyn in Custody

Baku /26.10.19 / Turan: The Baku Court of Appeal kept Ilham Huseyn, a member of the Board of the Higher Majlis of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), in custody. He was arrested for 60 days before the opposition rally on October 19.

During the hearing of the appeal against Huseyn’s arrest on Saturay, the activist’s lawyer Zibeyda Sadigova noted that her client was detained on October 16 and was sentenced to 60 days of arrest under Art. 206 (illegal use of narcotic drugs in the amount necessary for personal consumption) and 535.1 (disobedience to the lawful demand of a police officer) of the Code of Administrative Offenses (CAO).

Huseyn was detained on the morning of October 16 near his house. The documents indicated the detention in a completely different place.

The defense requested the recording of surveillance cameras near the house in which Huseyn lives. “In this case, it would turn out that Huseyn was indeed detained near his home and he showed no resistance or non-subordination to the police,” the lawyer said.

After the detention, Huseynov was taken to the 12th precinct of the Sabunchu district police department, where he was kept for 7 hours. After that, the oppositionist was taken for examination to the Republican Narcological Center.

In the center, the police received a conclusion that Huseyn was found drugs in the blood. However, Huseyn’s written consent must have been obtained for drug testing. But this was not done. Huseyn was also not allowed to invite his lawyer. He was not even allowed to call home and report the detention.

The defense petitioned to terminate the administrative case and issue a private ruling on those who illegally arrested Huseyn.

The arrested man himself also denied the charge and stated that he was arrested in connection with the rally on October 19.

Huseyn has been one of the organizers and presenter of many opposition rallies in recent years. –06D--
