Court of Appeal Did Not Satisfy Gezal Bayramlis Complaint
Baku / 20.04.18 / Turan: The Ganja Court of Appeal today dismissed the complaint of the deputy chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) Gezal Bayramli.
The Court of Appeal upheld the verdict of the Gazakh District Court for depriving Bayramli of her liberty for three years on charges of smuggling.
She was detained on May 25, 2017 at the state border on her return from Georgia. The investigation accused her of trying to import 12 thousand US dollars without a customs declaration. Bayramli rejected the accusations and declared political motives for her persecution. Human rights organizations have recognized her as a political prisoner.
Today, the court announced a response to the request of the court to the State Border Service and the State Customs Committee of Azerbaijan on the filing of records from security cameras at the customs checkpoint. In the response signed by the head of the investigation department of the State Border Service Mubariz Mammadov it was stated that the issue of records should be addressed to the State Customs Committee.
At the Customs they said the records are kept only for 1 month.
Attorney Elchin Sadigov in this regard said that a similar response was received by the defense even during the investigation.
"During the preliminary investigation, we submitted a document received from the Internet. This document states that the State Border Service in 2012 acquired equipment that allows you to save records for a long time. Does it turn out that the equipment that should have been purchased by a grant from the European Union was not purchased and these funds were misappropriated?" the lawyer wondered.
The state prosecutor again proposed to keep the verdict in force.
Bayramli said she did not expect a fair verdict. "The court will decide in accordance with the order they have received. If they want, they can announce the maximum sanction on the prosecution article," Sadigov said. -03B-
