During the week the Border Service seized over 106kg of drugs and 4,000 psychotropic pills
Baku/18.05.22/Turan: Azerbaijani border guards on the border with Iran seized 106 kg 495 grams of various drugs, as well as 4000 psychotropic pills during the last week.
The first border violation by Iran was recorded at midnight on May 12 near Gazakhlar village of Fizuli region. As a result of search operations 9 kg 400 grams of marijuana was found in the bushes near the border.
On May 15 at 02:20am, near Abasally village of Yardimly region four unknown persons violated the state border from Iran. After the border guards fired warning shots, the infiltrators abandoned their cargo and fled back to Iran.
At the site there were found 4 packages with a total mass of 79 kg 595 grams of drugs (including more than 45 kg of heroin), marijuana, opium and methamphetamine and 4.000 methadone pills.
On May 17, at 01:40 near Alchabulag village of Yardimly region the border violation from the Iranian side was recorded again. The order to stop was followed by submachine gun fire and the intruders ran away. Three bags with a total weight of 17 kg 500 grams of marijuana and an AKM 74 assault rifle with 20 bullets were found on the spot.
As a result of operational activities an Azerbaijani citizen suspected of having links to smuggling was detained not far from the scene of the incident. Investigative measures are underway, the Border Service reported on May 18. -02D-

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola has invited Azerbaijani economist and political prisoner Professor Gubad Ibadoglu to Strasbourg to attend the 2024 Sakharov Prize award ceremony.
