Father and son Akhundzade are on hunger strike in prison
Baku / 19.03.19 / Turan: The head of the Astara regional organization of the Islamic Party of Azerbaijan (IPA), Ruhulla Akhundzade, went on hunger strike in protest against "inhuman treatment" and "detention in a punishment cell," the head of the Center for the Protection of Political Prisoners, Oktay Gyulalyev, wrote about this on his facebook page. According to him, today his son, Mohammedali, who is also serving a sentence in prison, began a hunger strike. Akhundzade senior has been in prison for eight years. In 2013, he was operated on his heart. "Ruhulla Akhundzade has serious health problems. He takes medicine daily. Putting him in a punishment cell and carrying out his hunger strike is dangerous for his life. He served most of the punishment, it was expected that they would be released with his son, however, he was demanded to shave off his beard, which was an insult to the believer," wrote the human rights activist.
The head of the public relations department of the Prison Service, Mehman Sadigov, did not confirm the report on the hunger strike of Akhundzade"s father and son. According to him, the prisoners are kept in accordance with the requirements of the law. Ruhulla Akhundzade was arrested in January 2011 in the case of the Islamic Party and sentenced to 11.5 years in prison for creating an illegal armed group, appeals against the state, etc. His son was arrested in April 2016 on charges of drug trafficking, and was sentenced to five years in prison.
Human rights activists believe that Akhundzade"s son was arrested for distributing video materials about the persecution of activists of the Muslim Unity Movement in 2015. - 03B06-
