Human rights activist Elchin Mamed sentenced to 4 years in prison
Baku / 17.10.20 / Turan: The trial in the case of the head of the NGO Legal Education of Sumgayit Youth, Elchin Mamed, has ended in the Sumgayit City Court.
The court found him guilty of "theft" and "illegal possession of weapons" and sentenced Mamed to 4 years in prison.
Mamed denied the charges and regarded it with his human rights work.
The defense will appeal, Mamed's relatives said.
Mamed was arrested in March this year on charges of theft and illegal possession of weapons.
A complaint against him was filed by a woman to whom he provided legal assistance. The same woman had previously filed a complaint with the police against another journalist - the editor of the website criminal.az Anar Mammadov. Mamed believes that his persecution on a trumped-up charge contradicts the policy of President Ilham Aliyev to fight corruption and carry out judicial and legal reforms. Several international organizations have condemned the persecution of Mamed. –06D-
