Human rights defenders condemn pressures on family of political prisoner
Baku/01.07.23/Turan: "The Committee to Protect Victims of Transborder Persecution and Repression" (CPVTPR) issued a statement condemning the pressure on Nurana Ashurova, the wife of activist Samir Ashurov, arrested in Azerbaijan after being expelled from Germany.
The Committee's statement recalled that as a member of the "Republican Alternative Movement", Samir Ashurov was repeatedly subjected to administrative arrests in Azerbaijan and emigrated to Germany in 2018 to avoid criminal prosecution. There he continued his political activities and participated in protests against human rights violations in Azerbaijan.
"Despite threats of persecution in Azerbaijan, the German authorities refused to grant him asylum and in March 2022 deported him to Azerbaijan, in violation of international conventions, where he was arrested less than a month later on spurious charges of causing damage to human health", the statement reads.
The Committee recalls that other activists - Mutallim Orujov, Jafar Mirzoev, Pyunhan Kerimli, Ziya Ibragimov, Emin Melikov, Malik Rzayev - were also arrested after their expulsion from Germany.
The statement further points to the pressure on Samir Ashurov's wife Nurana Ashurova, who has been holding protests against the arrest of her husband and other activists.
"In this regard, she received periodic threatening phone messages demanding her to stop participating in the protests. On 22 June, police officers came to her rented flat and started asking her various questions. After the police left, the owner of the flat first reported an exorbitant increase in the rent, forcing Ashurova, along with her two minor children, to vacate the premises," the Committee said in a statement, which it regards these facts as pressure on the political prisoner's family.
The statement reads that Ashurova is a member of the Committee and is actively involved in human rights activities.
The statement concludes with a demand to the authorities to stop pressures on the political activists, their families and defenders.
It should be recalled that the Committee to Protect Victims of Transborder Persecution and Repression (CPVTPR) was established in June 2022 by a group of human rights defenders, activists and family members of political prisoners. The Committee operates as part of the NGO Institute for the Protection of Rights and Freedoms, which operates in Tbilisi under the leadership of human rights defender Avtandil Mammadov. -06В-
