Human rights defenders condemn torture in places of detention

Baku/24.10.19 / Turan: Detained during an opposition protest on October 19 in Baku were tortured in police stations. The most severely were tortured: the leader of the Popular Front Party Ali Kerimli, members of the National Council of Democratic Forces Tofig Yagublu and Ibrahim Ibrahimli, PFPA activists Jabbar Savalanly and Nijat Abdullazadeh.

Members of the Musavat party, Rahim Yagublu and Ayhan Hajizadeh, as well as other persons who are not party members, were subjected to physical pressure. Ogtay Gyulalyev, coordinator of the Committee against Torture and Repression, said this today during a hearing at Musavat headquarters. Torture is widespread in Azerbaijan, but authorities have always denied this. "Even when the facts are confirmed by photo and video materials, the official bodies refute them.

The cruelty shown on October 19 against the rally participants is confirmed by traces of violence on their bodies, as well as photos and video materials. The denial of torture by the prosecutor"s office and the Ministry of Internal Affairs is another evidence that the state is trying to hush up these illegal actions," he said.

However, these facts were confirmed in the report of the UN Committee against Torture, which states that the state is not undertaking anything to prevent torture and does not punish the perpetrators. "International organizations should take serious measures, and not be limited to statements. Strict measures should be taken against those who commit torture," Gyulalyev said.

A member of the National Council, Ibrahim Ibrahimli, tortured by the police, said that October 19 would be a turning point in the fight against despotism. "On this day, the unification of the people and the opposition began. Torture and reprisal further increase hatred of the regime," Ibrahimli said. Relatives of the soldiers killed during the investigation of the accused in the Terter case, as well as during special operations after the Ganja events and relatives of the arrested political prisoners who were tortured, also spoke at the hearings. -21D-
