Khadija Ismailova Awarded Prestigious International Prize
Baku / 26.06.20 / Turan: The Azerbaijani journalist Khadija Ismailova and the German film director Benjamin Best were awarded the 2020 Leipzig Prize for Freedom and the Future of the Media.
This was announced on June 25 by the Sparkasse Media Support Fund in Leipzig, which is responsible for paying a prize of 10 thousand euros to the laureate.
The report says that Ismailova investigated the facts of corruption in the highest echelons of power in Azerbaijan.
In 2014, she was arrested and sentenced to 7.5 years in prison on charges of tax evasion and embezzlement. Human rights organizations called these charges trumped up, and took it as punishment for investigative journalism about corruption of the leadership of Azerbaijan.
Amnesty International recognized the journalist as a prisoner of conscience. In 2016, Ismailova was released on parole, but not rehabilitated. -02D-
